For some people, Sunday night anxiety serves as the prelude to Monday morning blues. Make your whole week happier by learning to break the cycle.

Did you know 80% percent of working people say they feel sad and anxious as the weekend draws to a close, according to a survey by Monster.com. Almost 50% said the feelings are severe. Considering that Sunday and Monday represent about one-third of your week, that’s a lot of time you can reclaim with a positive approach. Review my nine ways to help you get rid of the Sunday Night Blues and begin to feel ok and in control again!
Ways to Beat Anxiety Starting The Friday Before

  1. Complete outstanding tasks. Start the next week with a clean slate. Tie up all loose ends by finishing projects if possible. If you are in the middle of a major undertaking, take a break at a stage that will be easy to pick up next week.  This will help you feel accomplished and at ease.

  2. Write up a list. Outline what you need to accomplish the following week. You’ll be able to use your notes as a reminder when you get back. You’ll also feel more relaxed when you have a clear picture of what to expect. I am the Maven of all Lists!  I write a To-Do List every morning, except Sunday, to achieve my goals.  And believe me, the older I get, the more I appreciate this type of organization.

  3. Clear away clutter. No one likes to be greeted by a crazy looking desk on Monday morning! It may be tempting to run out the door on Fridays, but take a few minutes to clear up before you leave. That way a clean desk will greet you first thing. Buy desktop organizers that will keep documents you’re still using orderly and out of sight until they’re ready to be filed.

  4. Make a clean break. Once you take care of your responsibilities, give yourself complete permission to focus on your personal life. Give your home and family your full attention. The gurus are calling this "mindfulness," being fully present and observant of your surroundings.  This includes not checking work email or listening to voicemails!

  5. Visualize your weekend. Picture the activities that restore your energies. In addition to the necessary errands and household repairs, schedule time for brunch with your best friend or a trip to the nearest ice skating rink with your children. Make time for yourself and implement a positive self-care routine.

Ways to Beat Anxiety on Sundays

  1. Go to bed early. A full night’s sleep will make it easier to rise on Monday. You may even be able to get up an hour in advance so you feel less rushed. I try my best to get to bed early on Sunday and up early on Monday to sip my morning tea and meditate.  Just doing this one thing has been life-changing!  Try it.

  2. Plan a special breakfast. Food helps to lift our spirits and getting a good breakfast is key to kicking your energy off for the day. Chop up a pineapple to add to your yogurt or stop off for a fancy coffee drink. Plan to create a great smoothie or drink a special protein shake to treat yourself.

  3. Lose yourself in something you love. Become absorbed in a favorite activity that seems to make the hours fly by. Engage in your favorite hobby or watch your favorite TV show.  Attend a church service or read a good book.  The sky is the limit, as long as you enjoy your day.

  4. Help others. Reaching out to others is one of the most constructive ways to take our minds off our own worries. Visit an elderly neighbor. Volunteer at a local hospital. Get connected to  a volunteer opportunity that you really support.  Most communities have volunteer centers that provide information on available volunteer opportunities.  To find your local center, click here.
