Well, I'm all for goal-setting, as long as those goals have heart and they are SMART! Because if you're not setting SMART goals, then you're just dreaming. And one year from now, it's very likely, you'll be right back here making the same pledge all over again. So, here are five quick strategies you can begin to start attracting your dream career. And, if you are thinking about changing jobs or elevating in your career, then I've got a special treat for you at the end of the post! ![]() If you don't already have your dream career, let me ask you a question. What's holding you back from the job you deserve? You'll soon discover that you can no longer make excuses because the time to attract your dream career and playing bigger in your life is now! It doesn't really matter what your end goal is, the only real decision you need to make is what you want to go after. After that, it's all planning and implementing! Check out these five simple strategies for attracting your dream career: 1.Learn by example. Do you know someone who is doing what you dream of? Are there any role models, mentors, or coaches you can learn from? Connect with them and set up an informational interview. The informational interview is a great tool to study what others have done and ask them questions about the industry, the job, the environment. It gives you a chance to understand what you're getting into before you expend too much time and energy pursuing. And that can be a real time saver. 2.Break it down. While you're keeping your eye on the prize, you might be taking too much in at once. You also may be trying to accomplish too much too fast. Going from entry-level to CEO in six months may be a tough goals to achieve. (Notice I didn't say impossible. It just depends on whether you're willing to put in the work). Now, for us normal humans, break down your dream goal into smaller mini-goals. Once you have a simplified plan in place, attack each mini-goal with your full attention and you'll be chipping away slowly, but surely at your dream goal! 3.Get your foot in the door. In the long run, it's better for you to take the first step toward your dream job, rather than working a dead end job, even if the dead end job is paying you more. If you can bear working for less money for a while, the long-term benefits will be worth it. This is a very advanced strategy, in that it requires self-sacrifice and a keen understanding of what you're trying to accomplish. So, for example, DO NOT quit your steady job at the bank to pursue your acting dream unless - and until - you have laid out a strategy beforehand. And, put away some money in your savings account to support your efforts. Only change jobs to get a foot in the door when you have a clear plan and have done the homework. Preferably with a very good career coach. 4.Work on communication. If you work on your communication and people skills, you can work toward nearly any job that you want. This is because you'll get your points across clearly and become well respected. How many times have we heard "Communication is key?" It really is. So, keep sharpening these skills, whether it's going to a Toastmasters chapter, taking on leadership roles in your volunteer organizations, or participating in training to help with conflict resolution. 5.Take action.
